1) Club Happenings

We have a new domain name!
We officially became tampa-bay.org this past week instead of tampa-bay.net.  The .org top level domain more properly indicates our status as a non-profit organization while the .net domain was intended to be used by companies that work with computer networks (i.e. www.earthlink.net).

We also moved our web to a new web host this week.  Not only is the new web "peppier", but we have more control and a few new features too.  What does this mean to you?  While I would suggest that you begin updating your bookmarks and favorites to our new .org address, the old ones should still work properly for months to come.  We've tried to make this as trouble-free and painless as possible to our users.  It you find a link that doesn't work, please let our Webmaster know at tbcs@tampabay.rr.com

As part of these changes, we've moved the club's mailing list to a new email program that both saves me time in mailing this Bulletin, but will also permit readers to subscribe and unsubscribe themselves so that I don't have to spend so much time managing the list.  We're also going to implement some email changes on our website designed to both standardize club email addresses, and also to virtually eliminate spam harvesting.  I'll let you know as this all takes place.

Open House & Random Acts of Kindness
It was another great one (but I always say that don't I?).  It was controlled chaos as our RAK troubleshooters fixed computers in 2 different areas of the Resource Center, while Jan Norman and Mary Kimball fed and watered visitors, and Frank Bucca and Howard Poindexter gave impromptu computer lessons in our lab.

Many thanks to all that helped make the event a success.  You'll see more details (plus some photos) in our next Bits & Bytes.

Interested in doing a media interview?
If you have recently purchased a laptop computer, and would be willing to be interviewed and quoted, please send an email to Doc: doc@synergypublishing.com.

Doc goes on an EMAIL RANT !!!
It happened to me once again - someone sent me an email berating me for not responding to an email they had sent previously.  Was I being lazy or deliberately ignoring them?  NO!  I deleted their mail without reading it because I thought it was spam.

Last Tuesday night at the General Meeting, I explained WHY I had overlooked their email.  Do you suspect maybe you're being ignored sometimes?  Take a look at a page that I've created to help you properly configure your email.

2) TBCS Classes

Windows Basics - Doc's Way - THIS WEEK!
Monday & Tuesday I (Doc) will be teaching Basic Windows at the Resource Center from 10am to 12:30.

It's been suggested that my Windows class should be labeled an Intermediate class instead of a Basic class (this is NOT the same class that Jan Norman teaches - hers is a hands-on class, while I try to cover a lot more ground in 2 sessions).

I've decided to make some last-minute changes in the structure of the class so that it works well for a broader audience: Window's Basics on Monday & Window's Intermediate on Tuesday.  You can come to either or to both.  Each day costs $10 (and our money-back guarantee is always in effect)

If you think that you might be interested, please take a look at this page: http://tampa-bay.org/boardbiz/doc/windowsclass.htm.

Basic Paint Shop Pro - THIS WEEK!
Howard Poindexter has almost filled another go-round for his hands-on, Basic Paint Shop Pro.  The next one will take place on October 30th & 31st from 1pm to 3pm each day at the Resource Center.  That's a total of 4 hours of instruction, and will cost $20.  Please email the club secretary (tbcs.office@verizon.net) if you want to register.

Adobe Photoshop Elements for Photographers
Once again we have prevailed upon Stan Ashbrook to deliver his popular Photoshop course - albeit with some changes.  Stan has extended the course and broken it into 2 separate sections.  Each section is 8 hours of instruction at a cost of $40, and they may be taken independently of each other.  All class sessions will take place on a Saturday from 9am to 11:30am (2-hour classes with a 30 minute break).

Section I: The Basics 11/8, 11/15, 11/22, & 12/6 (11/29 is skipped for Thanksgiving week)

Section II: Beyond the Basics 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, & 1/31

Details on what will be covered can be found at: http://www.computerphoto.org/pages/elements.html

Windows 101
Jan Norman's November class is filling.  It starts on Friday, November 7th and runs for 4 consecutive weeks from 1 to 3 in the afternoon.  That's 8 classroom hours for a total of $40.  Please contact Jan at: tbcs.office@verizon.net to register.

Currently, most of our classes take place during the daytime on weekdays.  If you would be interested in attending a class during the evenings, please send an email to tbcs.office@verizon.net and request it.  We'll see what we can do.

You can see our current classroom schedule and register online by surfing over to:

Free Computer Repair - TBCS Members Only
Schedule:  Monday & Wednesday 10am-1pm

One of the great benefits of your TBCS membership is that you can bring your computer in to our Resource Center, and Ron Kalmin and his crew will repair it for free on Monday & Wednesday mornings!

We can't guarantee our work, nor can we work on all machines (try finding someone to open up your laptop!), but our crew has a wonderful success record. We will even install software and hardware (such as RAM, hard drives, CDROMs, etc.).
